Asustek has released more details about their new EeePC-based net box, the EP20.
Gizmodo says expect a global launch this July in both Linux and Windows XP versions. The cheapest model will start at about $330 and pack an 80GB hard drive (maxing out at 250GB). It will include 802.11n Wi-Fi, 4 USB ports, and a slot for various flash memory cards.
AnandTech says it will have a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor paired with an Intel 945G chipset, along with 1GB of DDR2-667 memory and a 160GB 2.5″ hard drive.
- A $99 settop box might provide 5-6 “free” DVB-SH channels via ICO/Clearwire with medium resolution TV, Dish Network’s 700 MHz DVB-SH service, or Nextwave’s MXtv.
- Internet access could be supplied “free” via Clearwire Mobile WiMax (or the 2155MHz band) – using Microsoft’s Sideguide.
- Skype provides free phone service.
Launched in November, the “free triple play” box could be a crackling powerhouse by February 18, 2009. Stuff the HD with advertising. Impulse buy. Government subsidized.
“Tiers” provide the revenue. Premium TV channels, movies on demand, games, faster internet access, Skype WiFi/WiMAX handsets. You name it. The cable-less box.
