Hurricane Season Begins

Floridians are urged to prepare an emergency communications plan for the 2008 hurricane season which begins in June. Verizon Wireless offers these tips:

Keep wireless phone batteries fully charged – in case local power is lost – well before warnings are issued.

Intel has delayed the next generation “Montevina chipset until mind-July, with a formal launch in mid-August says PC Magazine. “Montevina” is the next-generation Centrino chipset, used in laptops and will include enhanced wireless capabilities with WiMAX and 802.11n.

OpenBook Reference Design — Free

Canadian AWS Auction is On

Canada’s government has launched an auction of wireless spectrum on Tuesday, reports Reuters, that will allow new players to break into the cellular phone market in the AWS band (1.7/2.1 GHz).

MaxFi: Longer Range?

A Dutch company and its British partner claims their WiFi access gear can to do most of what WiMax promises for a fraction of the cost, says TechWorld. The technology, called InspiAir, though, Dutch distributor KMC Systems has acquired the worldwide sales rights, renaming it Max-Fi.

FCC: Free Broadband at 2155-2180 MHz
