The Lexar Shoot-n-Sync Wi-Fi Memory Card utilizes the same wireless technology that Eye-Fi introduced earlier this year. The $99 card, which won’t be available until next month, appears to be pretty much a clone of the $99 Eye-Fi card.
It is compatible with SD-enabled digital cameras, and stores photos like a standard memory card. The Wi-Fi capabilities let you upload and share your photos through WiFi access points.
After a one-time setup using Eye-Fi Manager software, the Shoot-n-Sync software will upload photos as soon as you walk in the door or whenever you’re within range of your Wi-Fi network. Your photos can be automatically uploaded to your computer and your favorite photo-sharing site, such as Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, and TypePad.
Compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems, the 2GB Lexar Shoot-n-Sync Wi-Fi memory card will ship in October.
Lexar makes a lot of memory cards, so its technology sharing agreement with Eye-Fi could result in larger capacity or other form factors. Lexar, for example, has updated its Platinum II line with 16GB versions of its SDHC and CompactFlash cards. Lexar also announced new 2GB and 4GB Memory Stick Micro memory cards for your Sony Ericsson phone as well as MicroSDHC cards for a variety of cell phones. Lexar is a subsidiary of memory maker Micron Technology
Meanwhile, 2 Gig Eye-Fi cards are available now in three flavors; the $79 Eye-Fi Home (which connects to home computers), the original $99 Eye-Fi Share (which also connects to photo sharing sites), and the $129 Eye-Fi Explore (with built-in GPS).
