Getting a jump on Sprint’s Xohm launch in Chicago, Towerstream, a leading fixed WiMAX service provider, today announced it is now delivering WiMAX service to businesses in downtown Chicago using the 802.16e BreezeMAX 3650 solution from Alvarion.
“Installing 802.16e compliant technology from Alvarion enables us to take advantage of the economies of scale that Mobile WiMAX offers, while helping us bring our customers the speed, bandwidth and reliability they expect from Towerstream,” said Jeff Thompson, President and CEO of Towerstream.
It provides Towerstream with non-line-of-sight capabilities. As a result, the company can now offer its high-speed, wireless broadband service to additional businesses in downtown Chicago that did not previously have line-of-sight to a Towerstream Point of Presence (PoP). Towerstream is able to utilize its existing network infrastructure and equipment.

Towerstream offers a variety of bandwidth options from T-1 to 1000Mbps as well as Service Level Agreement (SLA) and a no-risk, money-back guarantee. Towerstream’s fixed wireless broadband network delivers high-speed Internet access supporting VoIP, bandwidth on demand, wireless redundancy, VPNs, disaster recovery, bundled data, and video services. Companies utilizing multiple appliances simultaneously, such as streaming video and VoIP, can prioritize their bandwidth to secure mission-critical activities.
In addition to Chicago, Towerstream currently serves businesses of all sizes in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth and Providence/Newport. Towerstream also offers a Rapid Installation Program which guarantees installation within 48 hours.
In related news, Axxcelera has announced the immediate availability of their FCC certificated ExcelMAX WiMAX solution for use within the 3.65 GHz spectrum (3.650-3.675 GHz).
The WiMAX Forum says 13 additional Mobile WiMAX devices have been designated as WiMAX Forum Certified. Some observers believe that Intel’s WiMAX/WiFi 5350 card, once inside laptops and netbooks, could give the nascent broadband wireless network a turbo boost.
The Forum says more than a dozen products are currently undergoing certification and will support more than 400 commercial WiMAX deployments in 133 countries.
