Apple’s iPhone 3G is now the second best-selling mobile handset in the US, just behind the Motorola Razr 3, according to market researcher NPD Group.

Mac Observer, which has tracked IMEI numbers on iPhones, has determined that Apple has drastically surpassed analyst’ Q4 iPhone sales estimates, and has already reached its goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008.

Apple estimated that Q4 (calendar Q3) would be approximately 4 million units. It now appears that Apple has sold at least 7 to 7.5 million iPhones in Q4, according to Mac Observer.

An International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a unique 15 digit code assigned to every GSM, UMTS and iDEN mobile phone as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed on the phone underneath the battery. Within this 15 digit code are two 6-digit numerical sequences crucial to determining the number of iPhones being produced.

One 6 digit number, known as the TAC, or Type Allocation Code, signifies a particular build or set of iPhones being manufactured. The second 6 digit number is unique to each individual iPhone produced in that particular series.

Meanwhile, Asustek Computer reports that it has shipped around 700,000 Eee PCs in September this year, a new monthly high. The company predicts sales of its popular Eee PC low-cost laptop will double next year to around 10 million units on strong demand from Europe and Asia.
