Spectrum Bridge (FAQ) has been called the eBay of wireless spectrum. The company aims to link buyers and sellers in the secondary spectrum market.

The FCC has granted some licensees the right to unbundle their spectrum. Spectrum owners may resell it to other parties, lease it, or even timeshare it. Spectrum Bridge lets companies find buyers. Fast.

Launching on October 30th, 2008, SpecEx is their online marketplace. It enables spectrum holders and buyers to sell, lease or exchange spectrum in a real-time and trusted environment. The company says they’ve hired the top FCC law firms so you don’t have to.

Their online marketplace appears poised to open up the airwaves to a new ecosystem of innovators.

The SpecEx value proposition is straight-forward: Enable “unlicensed” users to find and lease unused licensed spectrum. It allows new (secondary) users to deploy new products, services, and applications they wouldn’t ordinarily have access to. SpecEx makes it easy to find wireless products, services, and application providers needed to deploy a complete licensed spectrum solution.

SpecEx says their goal is to create an open and transparent environment for all members of the marketplace. They post the list of fees associated with joining, listing and conducting sales and leases. Most of the tools, support and capabilities of SpecEx are provided with no additional cost to members.

All accounts in the SpecEx system are subject to approval by Spectrum Bridge. Spectrum Bridge will review your account status and send an e-mail letting you know the status, and if approved, login to the SpecEx system.

Spectrum Bridge’s investors include MILCOM Technologies, a seed-stage investment fund; and OnPointTechnologies, an early-stage venture capital fund. Spectrum Bridge’s senior management team co-founded MeshNetworks, which was acquired by Motorola in late 2004. Individually, and jointly, they have created six successful startups, each of which resulted in either an acquisition or IPO.

It sounds like a pretty good idea. Spectrum Bridge is also a Dailywireless advertiser.
