Laptop Magazine says Intel’s new Convertible Classmate, a tablet-PC like device, will live alongside its clamshell Classmate PC (also known as the CTL 2go PC).

The Convertible Classmate will apparently make its debut at the upcoming CES in January. The convertible features a 8.9-inch swivel screen that can be operated by touch. The specs remain the same for this netbook: it will have a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, a 60 GB hard drive, and Windows XP.

Laptop Magazine’s verdict (and video):

Until we get a look at ASUS’ touchscreen Eee PCs we can firmly say the 2go tablet looks to be the most promising netbook with tablet capabilities on the market. Though the keyboard is an area of concern, its durable features, accelerometer and responsive touchscreen are all compelling for a $500 price. However, to make our final assessment, we will need to get a production unit.

It wouldn’t be the first Netbook tablet.

Gigabyte’s Netbook Tablet features a 1.6GHZ Intel Atom processor, 1GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB SATA HDD, 802.11b/g wireless, Bluetooth, a 1.3MP webcam, three USB 2.0 ports and an ExpressCard slot, handy for HSDPA and Mobile WiMAX cards.

The MSI Wind ($499) and the Eee PC 901/1001 ($649) are also expected soon.
