The Android Market is still tiny compared to the iPhone but Analysts Medialets says the top Android apps based on downloads, rating, and number of comments are a slightly limited mix of games, social networking, and audio tools.

  3. The Weather Channel:
    From customizable weather maps to video forecasts and severe weather alerts, The Weather Channel has you covered.
  4. ShopSavvy:
    Find out more information about a product based on its barcode or title.
  5. Ringdroid:
    Ringdroid is a ringtone creator for the Android platform.
  6. imeem Mobile:
    Personalized radio, anytime and anywhere.
  7. Shazam:
    Shazam is a music recognition app with Tag Now and My Tag options.
  8. Rings Extended:
    Use Rings Extended in any menu that allows you to change a system sound.
  9. Bonsai Blast:
    A puzzle game similar to Bust-A-Move.
  10. Brain Genius Deluxe:
    Tests your knowledge and helps you expand it.

Read/Write Web has written about some cool Android Applications, including BooRah (restaurant search), imeem (streaming music), and MySpace’s mobile app. They are also fans of WikiMobile (a Wikipedia app), iSkoot (Skype VoIP calls), Shazam (media player), ShopSavvy (barcode scanner/shopping assistant), TuneWiki (media player), iMap (weather maps), and wertago (for finding stuff to do). Mobvis (left), hopes to make mobile image understanding possible.

BrightKite, Shizzow, Plazes, Loopt and Whrrl let you declare your location and see where your friends are. Yahoo’s Fire Eagle, a central platform for storing and sharing location, does not have any social features. Instead, it is more likely to be built upon by Shizzow and similar services.

Apps have only been available for free on the Android platform, but Google plans to start offering paid applications as early as the first quarter, similar to Apple’s iPhone Apps store. Handango, Mobihand and Google’s Android Market have apps you can download. AndroidApps.com and AndroidApps.org are review sites.

Gizmodo lists the 10 Best Android Apps of 2008 and earlier reviewed Android’s 10 Most Exciting Apps while AppVee rates hundreds of Android Applications.
