A new wireless device, called the SMHEART LINK (pdf), enables users to view heart rate and workout data on their iPhones.

SMHEART LINK (FAQ) is a wireless bridge that aggregates data from a variety of sensors, including heart rate monitors and cycling cadence sensors, and then transmits it to an iPhone or iPod touch, where it can be used with any of the fitness applications. The dual mode receiver, operates at 5 kHz (analog, shorter range) and 2.4 GHz (digital, longer range).

The SMHEART LINK has iPhone applications designed specifically for the workout data coming from the device. iNewLeaf uses a profile of your metabolism combined with workout data to measure workout intensity and count how many calories you’re burning. iRPM+ (right) acts as a general fitness meter as well as a cycling computer. Another app, iSPINNING, is a spinning computer. There’s also a dedicated heart rate monitor, iBPM+, which is coming soon.

SMHEART LINK is compatible with a growing list of heart monitor chest straps including some from fitness leaders such as Polar, Garmin, Nike, Reebok, Timex Ironman, New Balance and Numetrex.

It is also compatible with biking sensors to track speed, cadence and power (watts). The iPhone also has a number of general fitness applications, like PushupFu.

SMHEART applications are free, but the SMHEART LINK wireless module sells for $155, not including the price of any heart rate or other sensors you may want.
