Proxim Wireless today announced the availability of a high throughput 802.11a/b/g/n USB client adapter. Proxim says the ORiNOCO 802.11a/b/g/n USB client adapter enables best-in-class real-world throughput exceeding 150 Mbps for laptops and desktops when used with Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-8000 and AP-800 access points.

Proxim’s ORiNOCO 802.11n products enable enterprises of all size to provide greater performance than existing Ethernet networks.

Proxim claims the ORiNOCO AP-8000 and AP-800 access points provide the industry’s highest performance to date with throughput exceeding 170 Mbps with a single radio and 320 Mbps with a dual radio solution. When paired with the 802.11a/b/g/n USB client, enterprise customers can experience end-to-end throughout performance exceeding 150 Mbps.

The new ORiNOCO 802.11a/b/g/n USB client adapter replaces the ORiNOCO 802.11b/g USB client adapter to take full advantage of the higher performance rates of 802.11n networks. The USB client adapters also include a base stand for use with either laptops or desktops, among other features:

  • Highest Performance – Best-in-class throughput exceeding 150Mbps when used with Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-800 and AP-8000 802.11n access points, substantially higher than typical 10/100 wired LANs.
  • Support for video, voice, data and mobility (quad play).
  • Versatility – Dual band 2×2 MIMO radio and support for all 2.4 GHz and 5GHz frequencies.
  • High Security – Supports WEP (64-bit and 128 bit), WPA and WPA2/802.11i wireless security protocols.

“Wireless continues to replace wired technology in the enterprise and beyond, both from a cost and performance standpoint,” said Robb Henshaw, Director of Marketing at Proxim Wireless. “As this trend continues, more organizations prefer to have a single source for their entire wireless network. This new 802.11a/b/g/n USB adapter – when paired with our ORiNOCO AP-8000 and AP-800 802.11a/b/g/n access points – provides the industry’s highest performance 802.11n networks and rounds out our end-to-end enterprise WLAN portfolio with the full capabilities of 802.11n.”

Proxim’s ORiNOCO 802.11a/b/g/n USB client adapters are available immediately for $75.00. Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-8000 and AP-800 access points are $1,099 and $799 respectively.

In other news, Proxim today announced that KPN Hotspots B.V., Holland’s largest provider of Wi-Fi hotspots, is expanding its partnership with Proxim, ordering more than 600 new access points from Proxim to continue the expansion of its network. KPN already has more than 2,000 of Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-700 and AP-4000 access points deployed throughout Holland and has partnered with Proxim to deliver Wi-Fi hotspot services for nearly three years.
