At Spacefest in San Diego, last February, the two main actors from “2001: A Space Odyssey”, Keir Dullea (left) and Gary Lockwood (right) helped celebrate the exploration of Space, along with scientists and space fans.

SETI scientist Seth Shostak interviewed (MP-3) the two actors to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing and the International Year of Astronomy.

Researchers remain confident that some trace of life — either microbial or technological — is likely to be uncovered in the next two dozen years. One key tool in the search is the Allen Telescope Array, still under construction in California. It began operation in 2007 and ultimately will use 350 radio telescopes 24/7 to aid in the search for signals from beyond.

In other news, the red supergiant star Betelgeuse, the bright reddish star in the constellation Orion, has steadily shrunk over the past 15 years, according to University of California, Berkeley, researchers.

It may have already gone Supernova.
