Satellite phone provider TerreStar, which launched the world’s largest commercial satellite on July 1st, today announced it has successfully deployed its 18 meter 2GHz S Band reflector, the largest antenna yet deployed commercially.

TerreStar-1 is now poised to deliver the voice, data and video services over their all IP network which combines TerreStar’s all-IP core network, and smartphone technology using AT&T Mobility’s cellular network.

TerreStar’s handsets can switch between satellite and 3G coverage. Soon, using Terrestar’s licensed 2GHz radio spectrum on their terrestrial repeaters, TerreStar will use I-HSPA (for voice over HSPA), providing both voice service as well as data. With I-HSPA, networks are optimized for native IP applications, combining voice and data.

When TerreStar’s service is available later in 2009, the company will provide universal access and tailored applications to millions of users throughout North America via mass market commercial wireless devices. TerreStar will serve a range of customers including homeland security agencies, public safety agencies, rural communities, and wireless carriers.
