Toyota has planted five 18-foot tall “solar flowers” in Boston’s Prudential Plaza and provided free Wi-Fi and electricity, reports Engadget.
The solar panels attached to the petals and stem “partially power” the device. The generated electricity travels down the stem to plastic green benches with 110-volt outlets. Each of the five flower provide room for up to 10 people to sit while charging their cell phones, laptops and other devices.
The Prius Solar Flowers will also appear at:
- New York – Flatiron Plaza (23rd Street Plaza), Jul 23rd – August 2nd
- Chicago – Navy Pier, August 8th – August 22nd
- Seattle – Westlake Park, August 29th – September 7th
- San Francisco – Yerba Buena Gardens, September 12th – September 27th
- Los Angeles – The Americana, October 3rd – October 18th
The Meraki Solar WiFi hotspot ($799), is a 200 wW outdoor radio which provides solar power for remote locations such as roof tops.
Meraki’s solar mesh repeaters eliminate running power to remote installations and uses the latest lithium iron phosphate batteries. It requires a separate solar panel (20 or 40 watts). Like other Meraki radios, it’s integrated with Meraki Dashboard (product blog), enabling you to monitor and configure them remotely. Each Solar unit is completely self-contained and ready to mount on roofs, poles, or anywhere else the sun shines.
Oregon Wind hopes to began producing a “beta run” of at least 50 windmills in the near future.
TriMet, Portland’s transit agency, will install 22 of them at the South Terminus. Discussions are underway to sell the others to the Oregon Zoo and Multnomah County.
A sculptural framework clads two utility buildings in coil drapery, supporting a 50 KW solar panel array on the south.
A granite “meter” bench in the public plaza will indicate the quantity of energy being produced by both the solar panels and the 22 vertical axis wind turbines installed on the tops of the steel poles supporting the catenary wires that power the light rail trains.
