URL shortening services like Bit.ly and TinyURL are getting competition from the big G. This week Google launched Goo.gl, a URL shortening service that have come into power thanks to Twitter.
Google URL shortener is not a stand-alone service; you can’t use it to shorten links directly. Currently, Google URL Shortener is only available from the Google Toolbar and FeedBurner. If the service proves useful, the company says it may eventually make it available for a wider audience in the future.
Bit.ly came back just hours later by offering a professional service and Facebook is testing a new URL sortener, fb.me
A short URL is useful to copy on an e-mail or a forum post, and particularly useful for Twitter and other services where character space per post is limited.
