Light Reading Mobile created an updated chart of six key metrics, of the mobile operators in the United States; Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Clearwire, US Cellular, MetroPCS and Leap Wireless.

Of course it’s possible that new companies could come out of left field, such as Harbinger Capital with their broadband wireless terrestrial/satellite system called LightSquared.

Other possible entrants into mobile voice and video include a pairing of T-Mobile and Clearwire, or Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Strand-mounted hotspots could deliver 100+ Mbps WiMAX 2.0 on every block. New entrants, using LTE or WiMAX might use new spectrum, such as White Spaces, promoted by Google, Microsoft and others.

Could new entrants cause an extinction event? Who knows. It’s a flat world.

Something to say?
