Will Android + NVIDIA become the new Wintel, asks Jason Hiner at ZD Net. He believes the Wintel alliance is about to move from the driver’s seat to the back seat.

He makes a good case:

  • Mobile computing is about to zoom past the PC ecosystem
  • Multitouch tablets are about to explode.
  • Smartphones will start to replace some PCs.
  • In 2010, Apple passed Microsoft to become the world’s largest tech company.
  • Nvidia’s dual core Tegra 2 was everywhere at CES 2011
  • NVIDIA made a big bet on mobile processors in recent years

Hiner says the top dogs in mobile are going to be Android and NVIDIA, and these two will no longer be limited to just hand-held devices but will soon move into Wintel territory.

A number of European operators hope Nokia, now the world’s 2nd largest smartphone software company, will rule-out the possibility of using Android in future smartphones, according to the Financial Times. Operators “such as” Vodafone, Telefonica and Orange are hoping that Stephen Elop, the Finnish company’s CEO, will reiterate support for the fledgling MeeGo platform as an alternative to Android and Apple’s iOS.

They think Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 is the lesser of the evils – although it could also undermine the MeeGo ecosystem. Nokia is expected to detail its refreshed device platform strategy at an analyst event later this week.
