Google announced Google Offers beta in Portland, Oregon at the D9 Conference.
Google Offers is a Groupon-like service for local businesses in Portland like Floyd’s Coffee, Powell’s Books and Ground Kontrol Arcade. Google hopes to bring Google Offers to other cities soon, with New York City and the San Francisco Bay area as their next stops.
Before noon on June 1, apparently more than half of the 2,000 coupons for Floyd’s Coffee had been purchased. The deal–$3 for $10 worth of drinks and food–is good for a year at either of the two Floyd’s coffee shops.
Last year, Google reportedly tried to buy Groupon, the leader in the daily-deals market, for between $5 billion and $6 billion, but Groupon decided to remain independent. Today Groupon filed to raise $750 million in an initial public offering.
I live in Portland, so I’ll check Google’s booth at the Rose Festival amusement park (as soon as it stops raining).
