Samsung’s upcoming Super AMOLED HD display will be unveiled soon, says OLED-Info.com. They expect 5″ to 6″ smartphones in fall 2011 (the first will probably be the GT-I9220 with a 5.3″ display) and 7″ tablets by the end of 2011.
Active-matrix OLED uses Organic Light-Emitting Diodes to form the electroluminescent material. An OLED display functions without a backlight.
OLED-Info says Samsung achieved HD resolution on these small displays by using PenTile matrix (like in the original Super AMOLED displays). They have also developed a new manufacturing process and are using new materials.
The display should be clearer because of the added sub-pixels and better matrix design. According to Samsung, Super AMOLED Plus displays are not only clearer but they’re also thinner, brighter and use 18% less energy than the old Super AMOLED displays.
Samsung has marketed their version of this technology as Super AMOLED. Their newest version, Super AMOLED Plus, is in the Samsung Galaxy S II, Samsung Infuse and Samsung Droid Charge. A Super-AMOLED display is expected to cost about 20% more than an equivalent S-LCD.
The Motorola Droid HD is expected to feature a 4.5-inch display (presumably with qHD or even 1280×720 resolution, a TI OMAP 4430 1GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel rear camera, and microUSB/HDMI ports.
NVIDIA’s quad-core Kal-El may be faster than light. A platform for downloading books, magazines, music, video and games is going to look less like a PC and more like a tablet.
Plug in a keyboard and monitor — or 3D projector. Done.
