Azalea is the code name for a major electronics factory being courted by economic development officials in Oregon and New York, reports The Oregonian.
Industry insiders believe Azalea is a semiconductor factory, known as a fab, reports The Oregonian. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s largest contract chipmaker, acknowledges it’s contemplating another U.S. factory.
Officials in Camas, Washington, where TSMC operates the WaferTech fab, say the company is considering a second one there. At stake: A thousand manufacturing jobs, thousands more short-term construction jobs, and billions of dollars in investment.
If Apple moves its chip contracting from Samsung to TSMC, this fab could be busy.
