- Windows 8 devices, including laptops, ultrabooks and tablets, may also contain the latest and greatest Intel Atom chip, Intel’s Bay Trail, said to be a game changer.
The new Atom chip can run Windows 8.1 and/or Android. Early performance tests show more than 2x performance over the previous Z2760 Atom processor, easily beating existing designs in the market.
EE Times believes, Intel’s Bay Trail processor will be competitive with the SoCs from Apple, Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Samsung, but success will depend on sell-through of the X-86, Windows 8–based designs from companies like ASUS, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, etc.
Intel will be showing off some 22nm Bay Trail-based hardware at IDF (the Intel Developer Forum) between September 10th and 12th.
