AT&T has agreed to acquire AWS Spectrum from Aloha Partners. The licenses cover nearly 50 million people in 14 states — California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. AT&T anticipates closing the transaction in the second half of 2014. Financial terms were not disclosed.
This acquisition complements AT&T’s existing AWS holdings, mostly from their purchase of Leap Wireless, but their AWS coverage is a distant 3rd, compared to the AWS (1.7/2.1 GHz) holdings of Verizon and T-Mobile.
Sprint has virtually no AWS spectrum, instead utilizing their 190 MHz of 2.6 GHz and their Sprint Spark strategy to unite their 800, 1.9GHz and 2.6 GHz holdings.
