FCC Delays Meeting, Okays Mergers & White Spaces

Today’s Federal Communications Commission meeting has been delayed as the five commissioners sought to finalize conditions for Verizon Wireless’s acquisition of Alltel.

WiQuest Communications officially closed its doors on Oct 31, the first of perhaps several casualties to fall among ultrawideband chip designers, says EE Times. The Allen, Texas, company employed about 120 people focused on the wireless USB protocol.

DOJ Okays Alltel/Verizon Merger

The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday gave the green light on the merger of Alltel with Verizon Wireless. Sony Laptop Batteries Recalled

Laptop-makers including Hewlett-Packard and Toshiba are recalling 100,000 Sony-made batteries due to fears they may overheat or catch fire.
The recall affects around 74,000 HP laptops, 14,400 from Toshiba, and small numbers from Dell, Acer and Lenovo. Sony said the recall came after 40 instances of overheating, including four cases where users had minor burns.

According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker, worldwide PC shipments were up 15.8% year over year, which was slightly less than projected. Strong results in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) helped offset tepid growth in other emerging regions, while the U.S. and Japan held steady.
